Tell us a little about yourself….
I was born in San Juan, Puerto Rico. I am from a military family, so growing up took place where ever the Army decided my dad should be stationed. Luckily, I got the chance to be in places like Germany, Puerto Rico, Colorado, and, lastly, Texas. I’ve been in Texas for 14 years so I consider myself a Puerto Texican hehe.

What is the best advice you could give to someone who is thinking about a new career in the beauty industry…..
My best advice is to never give up and to adapt to change. There will be highs and lows but when you keep moving forward with all the challenges you may face, it makes your success story even sweeter. 
 I started my first Eyelash Extension business at the age of 23 and it was nerve-racking but I knew that if I wanted to be successful, I had to take risks. I had no business experience and I really didn’t have a lot of money but one thing I had was passion. I believe if you’re passionate about something, success always follows. You don’t have to be great to start, but you have to start to be great. 
Early on in my career I relocated to a new city shortly after starting my new salon. It was hard to leave a business that I had not only worked hard on, but I had barely even started. I knew that in order to be successful, that I would have to adapt to change, whether planned or not, because change is inevitable. My ability to adapt, has allowed me to capture many opportunities. From crossing over my fitness career, to creating a fitness beauty content for major fitness publications, to extending my current business PeachyKeen Studio and experience into an online platform, my newest endeavor, BeautyFix.io.

We all love beauty products, what are your top 3 you CANNOT live without?
My top 3 beauty products that I cannot live without is #1 eyelash extensions because you wake up feeling made up, concealer because I have dark circles whether I get 1 hour of sleep or 10, and blush or bronzer.   My Favorite concealer is Mac Cosmetic’s Prolongwear because it has a great coverage and it doesn’t crease. My favorite blush is Mac Cosmetic’s blush in the color Peaches.

Tell us an interesting fact about yourself.
An interesting fact about myself is that I was a professional bodybuilder (in the bikini division) for 4 years and I am a Bodybuilding.com Spokesmodel. Fitness is a way of life and whether I do it professionally or not, being healthy will always be one of my passions.

We can finally put a face with the name! Tell us a little about yourself (where you grew up, where you went to school, and your original plans after college)
I have always lived in Dallas, except during college years.  I attended St. Mary’s University in San Antonio, TX and majored in International Business and Marketing.  My goals at this time never included retail, much less owning a boutique!  After graduation, I was offered a position at the JCPenney’s buying office in Plano, TX.  It was during these grateful years that I appreciated the industry and grew to love it!  

You mentioned you worked at JcPenney, what made you decide to leave and open up your own retail shop? What exactly does MOVIDA mean, and what is the significance?
During my years at JCPenney’s buying office, I learned so much about the industry, the buying process, and most importantly great work ethics.  Honestly, there are times I do miss the hustle and bustle of the corporate environment.  After many conversations about how much I love my job, a friend mentioned I should open my own store.  The thought was scary but exciting at the same time.  So I began my business plan.The story behind the name ‘Movida’ is so simple but still meaningful to me.  I used to subscribe to a fashion/lifestyle magazine called “Latina” . Of course I loved the fashion articles and pictures, but the main reason I loved that magazine was because of the editorial section called “Movida”.  This editorial would feature emerging women entrepreneurs.  Their stories were amazing and inspiring.

Your are a pioneer in the women’s boutique business in Dallas, what would you contribute your success to be?
This question really makes me feel old, haha!  Its been 15 years since I  opened these doors but doesn’t feel like it.  I am still learning about the business.  It’s been such a roller coaster of highs and lows, although I love the highs, its the lows that made me stronger and wiser.      Success is a strong word and hard for me to accept maybe that is why  I have stayed in business so long.  I am always creating new goals for Movida and myself, therefore I always feel like I’m on a path to success just not exactly there yet.  Does that make sense?  

If you could offer any advice to a young lady interested in opening up her own boutique, what would it be?
I get this question often and could probably write a book on this!  However, I can sum up 3 important ones that I wish someone would have told me 15 years ago.
1.  Assemble a trusted council of people who are experts and love what they do.  Value and utilize them!
2.  Be humble and appreciate the small accomplishments.  Always have small goals to help lead you the big ones.  It will help you stay focused.
3.  Learn time management and put it to use!  Everyone will ask for your time, be wise where you invest it.

Tell us some interesting facts about yourself.
So, this may be the hardest question I have had in a long time!  After thinking about this for awhile, I realized I am just a boring boss mom.  My week is full of work and my weekends are full of kids activities.  However, I would have it no other way!  
Oh, did I mention I was a single mom for 8 years until I met my hubby.  We now have 2 amazing children, Juliana (13yrs) and Ryan (4yrs).

1.  Tell us about your company and your role.

My company is Armada Skilled Homecare Services. We provide in home nursing and rehab to patients in the comfort of their homes. I am one of the owners and the director of business development.

2.  After being a full time stay home mom, why did you decide to re-invent yourself into an entrepreneur?

After turning 40 and being a stay at home mom for many years I felt as if my chances at a professional career were impossible. Then I was given a rare opportunity to help start and lead a company that had a great potential for success. I had no experience in the medical industry. But through training and support from my team of co-owners and staff I buillt the confidence I needed to know I have made the right decision.

3.  What challenges, if any, have you encountered by being in a non-traditional female industry?

The medical community is so diverse. My interactions are mostly with male physicians but sometimes with nurses and case managers. My biggest challenge is to create access to physicians offices in order to allow my team the chance of delivering the innovative concept that Armada brings to patient care.

Meet Kristin Mullen, owner of Events by Kristin.

1.Tell us a little bit about yourself. When did you first know you wanted to be an event planner?

It all started in college when I joined Chi Omega Sorority and in my junior was asked to chair our annual Chili Cook-Off. I agreed, having no idea what I was getting myself into. The following Summer I did an internship with The Make-A-Wish Foundation and fell even more in love with event planning. I knew then, that this is what I wanted to do! After graduation, I took a job at a country club as the Private Event Coordinator and from there started Events by Kristin in 2011 have been planning wedding & events ever since! 


2. What is your FAVORITE part of the business? 
My favorite part is The relationship I gain with my clients and brides – getting to know their story, how they met, how he proposed and what is important to them! 


3. What advice would you give to someone who is interested in exploring the event planning business?

I always encourage anyone interested in getting into the event industry to get experience with a venue or catering company first. You learn so much, so fast and it really let’s you see the in’s and out’s of event planning business.

Meet Nasaem Sabeti, co- owner of Pouf

I balance being a #bossmom by staying as organized as possible, multi-tasking and trying to function at my highest efficiency. Someone once asked me if I could have any super power what would it be and I said I’d choose to be the most efficient person on earth, making use of every waking moment. Kind of a boring choice but very useful! Also, I’ve been fortunate enough to have wonderful and supportive friends and family who offer their help and support. I take full advantage of that, I’m not shy to ask for help.

My favorite feeling in the world is making women feel as beautiful as they are and helping them feel confident. Sometimes all a girl needs to show off her inner talent is a blowout and a powdered nose. Opening a blowout/beauty salon made the most sense to me. It’s a way for me to make women look gorgeous in the biggest way I can. Maryam (my business partner and co-founder) and I loved the concept of a no cut, no color salon where it’s just easy, fun, instant beauty. We’re hard working moms who want to help out other hard working women look fabulous, because we know that can be a daunting task when juggling everything that life throws at you!

My advice to young women wanting to open a business is to do as much research as humanly possible. Have a plan A, B and C. Opening a business is full of surprises both exciting and challenging and you need to be prepared for whatever comes your way. So make sure you have a solid business plan that you’ve shared with trusted professionals and keep the company of like-minded individuals who inspire and support you so they can be your cheerleaders and help keep you on track when things get tough.

Start small. It may be exciting to want to join the big leagues right away but slow, steady growth wins the race.

Be a humble learner. Shut off your ego sometimes, because it can filter out really great advice. It may not always make sense at the moment or apply to you but all advice is worth hearing and considering. Log it away and draw on it when needed.

Relationships are everything. Your relationships with future clients, other businesses, employees, vendors – they’re all important and in a world where holding a consumer’s attention is as difficult as evening out the wings of your liquid liner, you’ll rely on those relationships to grow your business. Because people want to spend their money with businesses they feel like they know on a personal level. And I don’t have to tell you that word-of-mouth is e.v.e.r.y.t.h.i.n.g.

Be positive, creative and realistic. Don’t underestimate the power of your thoughts. Use that gorgeous brain!
